Snake

It's Snake. Eat the food. Grow longer. Don't run into yourself. I built it in an afternoon and then spent a week adding things.

About This Game

Everyone knows Snake. You eat the food. You grow longer. You try not to crash into yourself or the walls. That's the game. That's been the game since the 1970s. I'm not improving on it. I'm just paying tribute.

Then I started adding things. Three difficulties. Four grid sizes. Solid walls or wrap-around. Four color themes. A challenge mode with obstacles that show up at level two. Bonus food worth thirty points that appears once you've earned fifty. A leaderboard for every combination of settings. I have a problem. We've established this.

The themes are my favorite part. Classic is cyan and pink. Retro is bright green on black, like an old terminal. Ocean is cool blues. Sunset is warm oranges. I made the retro one first and almost called it done. Then I made three more because I couldn't help myself.

Every time you eat food, the snake gets a little faster. Every time. Eventually you're moving so fast that one wrong key press is the end. That's the part that gets me. The slow buildup of pressure. You're fine, you're fine, you're fine, and then suddenly your finger slips and you're staring at GAME OVER. I've thrown my mouse for less.

How to Play

Controls Arrow keys or WASD, P to pause

Arrow keys or WASD to steer. Don't hit the walls. Don't hit yourself. Eat the food to grow and earn points. The bigger you are, the harder it gets. P or Space to pause. M to mute. On mobile, swipe or use the on-screen D-pad. Settings let you change difficulty, grid size, walls, theme, and mode. Try Challenge mode if you're feeling cocky. The obstacles will humble you.

I had Snake on my Nokia in 2002. I played it during meetings. I played it on the bus. I played it instead of sleeping. So I built one for the site. It felt like coming home.
